Building awareness, inspiration and understanding about synthetic media

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

About the podcast

What is synthetic media? Synthetic media is any content – images, video, audio, text, or 3D – that has been generated, modified, or augmented by artificial intelligence. Think machine-made media. Not human-generated media. It includes everything from AI voice cloning and digital avatars to text-to-image models, virtual production, and yes, deepfakes. While deepfakes get most of the headlines, the vast majority of synthetic media is being used for legitimate, creative, educational, and commercial purposes now… as predicted.

What is the Synthetic Media Podcast? The Synthetic Media Podcast is an interview show that explores the people, ideas, and ethics behind synthetic media. We talk with artists, scholars, technologists, startups, policymakers, and established companies who create, study, or shape the responsible use of AI-generated content. Our goal is to look beyond the fear, hype, and jargon to build awareness, inspiration, and understanding of where this technology is going.

Why is synthetic media growing in popularity?

Synthetic media is faster, cheaper, more scalable, and now, sometimes better quality than human-generated media.

Can I trust synthetic media?
It is not about trust. It is not human vs. machine. Which media do you trust? Which humans do you trust? The same challenges apply today as before. CAI uncovers some of this, so you can identify the original sources of the media and how the media was created and edited.

Most people can no longer tell what was created by machine and/or human today.
